I have a friend who could possibly pass as a latin person. My friend speaks spanish, but she is african american. When we go out to latin places I believe that she wants people to believe she's not black. Me myself could pass for cuban/dominican/puertorican and any other island culture, but I am very honest about my race. Should I ask her why is she that way or just accept it and move on?

Well I've always believed that its our job as a good friend to let our friends know what we feel, untill they tell us to shut it. so yes tell her, cos thats what friends do, if she doesn't like then she'll eventually hear it from someone else.

Look people are just that "people" regardless of "race" or ethnicity. Maybe she is just a people person and is having good manners by "acting & speaking" in a way that is common & comfortable for the Latin community she is hanging out in.

Try "passing" as a human being first and then if you feel some "need" to identify with a specific nationality then do it.
This sounds more like YOUR issue than hers.

Look I could "pass" for many different "european ethnicitys"- swedish, scots, english, german, irish, slavic, russian, norweign...or about 50 more ethnic backgrounds
whats the point?
Why don't you try to HELP to stop the division of peoples based on physical characteristics/ethnic backgrounds,
instead of making it an "Issue"

i think you should voice your opinion especially if you are going out with her. think of it this way if she can't be true to herself how could she be true to you. you need to find out what make her do that. some of my family are just like that with the mixed culture and i have some who longs like white and some who looks like Spanish. but one female out of all did not want to accept the fact that she is black, she convince herself that she is white, and hang out with whites only and so forth, until one day her own white friends made her to understand how black she was, and i was really heart breaking to see what she went through. so before someone have to do the same to her, you should really have a talk with her, but do it in a very polite way and not a disrespectful manner. who knows in the long run she might thank you for it. i'm not saying that i'm appearing off race or anything but you need to be and accept yourself and people would like you, people don't like when your not being yourself.

If she's a good friend, you could certainly ask her why she isn't proud of who she is and why she wants to pretend she's someone she isn't. Maybe, through talking about this, she'll come to realize that she doesn't have to pretend to be someone else and that she'll be loved and respected for who she is. Maybe she had a negative experience in childhood that traumatized her. I'm sure she'll realize you're not trying to hurt her by expressing your concern for her.

Speaking spanish does not offend anyone. And if she has a problem with her heritage. There is not much you can do.You can ask her why she uses spanish instead of english.Just do it out of curiosity and avoid any fights.

Now, if she ACTIVELY starts talking bad about herself then yes, you should say something but if she just let's everyone "Assume" she is "Whatever" then just let her be.

She may be ashamed at who she is but there is nothing you can do to make her feel better about herself so just let her do what she wants to do... She will eventually grow out of it.

You can't hate yourself forever!!

I'd opt for accept it. I had a friend who was African-American (his label) but his mother is Puerto Rican. It's all about self-identity.
