The name comes from the Greek name Ariadne meaning "most holy" and a Welsh name meaning "silver". Ariana can also come from the root 'aria' meaning melody or song, in which case, the name would mean 'singer', "Like a beautiful melody". Yeah, it can also mean Arian...in the Middle Persian languages, the name Ariana meant anyone born in Aryan territories, such as the Persian Empire (Iran), or Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. However, I don't think it's really seen as that by many people and he shouldn't worry. I say if you ever do get pregnant, you should have more say in the name since you're the one carrying that extra weight around for 9 months and then giving birth! :-P. I think Ariana is a really pretty name too.

I think it's a good name, but no need to argue about it until the time comes when you have a child!

and who are all you other answerers to say that "Ariana" is misspelled...just because a name isn't spelled the way you think it should be, doesn't mean it's spelled incorrectly!

The Aryan (correct spelling) similarity is definitely my own personal turn-off with Ariana, and I think it's great that your boyfriend would actually think ahead to that possibly problematic issue. Don't get me wrong ... I'm fully familiar with the name and it's (completely non-racist LOL) origins, but you can't deny the resemblance, and the dozens of little "Aryanas" and "Aryannas" I've seen in announcements -- or one whom I know personally! -- certainly don't help. When one of the most common misspellings of a name DOES contain that exact negative reference, it can't help those who CAN spell, know what I mean? LOL

For what it's worth, if you truly like the name but he can't get past the Aryan image, why not use the original Ariadne (ah-ree-AHD-nee)? To be quite honest, I find that even more attractive ... and less common, which is a plus! ;)

Hope that helps!

Its not worth an argument with your boyfriend if you aren't even pregnant.

I guess I'm not seeing the connection between him being black and thinking it sounds like Arian. Clue me in!

I think its a nice name. Someday, when you DO have children, just pick a name that has meaning to both you and the father. Its a compromise you'll have to learn to make.

I certainly wouldn't think the name was Aryan just because it's Ariana. I like it.

why is the name contraverisal?
I know a biracial child named Ariana. But truthfully I don't think of names in terms of race.

I think that if you're not pregnant there is no need to discuss.

It's actually Aryan that it sounds too much like. The Aryan brotherhood is a gang of racist white people who think that blacks should be exterminated.

But FTR I think that if it made my BF(in my case it's husband) uncomfortable, I'd cross it off my list.
