Depends on what you call a "sports bike". You can get lots of information here:
http://www.beginnerbikers.org/
They recommend something like a Honda 250 Nighthawk for a first bike. Once you feel comfortable and safe in the saddle, you can trade it in for pretty much whatever you want.
If you really must have something more sporty than that, the Ninja 250 wouldn't be a bad choice.
Definitely avoid a hard-core 600+cc sports bike for your first bike. They don't call them "donorcycles" for nothing.

top nominee's for begginers that DONT want to become road pizza: buell, ninja 250, or a ninja 500. what u need is something that is 500cc's or less when it comes to sport bikes.
in the right hands, an experienced rider on a 'lowly 250' will outride a squid on a liter bike. what u dont need is a bike that will run away from u. u need a forgiving bike. quit listening to these idiots about 'growing out of it in 2 months'. the most lethal time for ANY rider historically and statistically is the first 6 months.
a 250 might not seem much, but this little scoot can and will generate enough speed to get a rookie into trouble. remember the mantra: the first time u disrespect the bike, and think u know it all, that will be the day the bike shows u a new trick.

the writer also rides a big 'bussa.

I'd go with a 500 cc or smaller bike with a proven track record. There's four great examples on the market in the US: The Kawasaki Ninja 250 and 500, Buell Blast, and Suzuki GS500F. Check them all out and see which one is the most comforable. All of them can keep up with highway traffic, although you kind of have to wind up the Ninja 250 to do this.
I've been riding 500s for about a year and haven't come anywhere close to "outgrowing" them. I often don't even open the throttle past halfway in a 40 mile ride. A 100 hp, 600 cc supersport would be much harder to learn on. Remember, this is your first bike, not your last.

This question is asked by quite a lot of new riders. When I started out I choose the Suzuki GSX 600 Katana. This is not to be confused with the gsxR 600. Totally different in power, torque and weight. It's fast enough that you wont get completely bored with it in half a season like you would with a 250cc and not fast enough that you'll get yourself killed by a twist of the wrist too. A Ninja 250 would be a great choice if you were to be in the city and you're just going from stop light to stop light, but when you're on the highway a lot when commuting I'd say the Katana is a great choice. It's a heavy one at over 450 lbs, but that weight can be a good thing sometimes. I also suggest you take your local MSF course which will help you learn the basics and can (in some states) decrease your insurance.

There is really no such a thing as a sport bike for a beginner, but the lesser of the evils would be a Ninja 250. It is small, light, fast as all get out, but will get you killed as easy as the rest.
Sport bikes are very ironic; they are faster than most anything out there, will out-acclerate and out-stop about anything on the road, and will handle curves nothing else will at great speed. In theory, they should be the safest bikes out there, except for the nut between the Handlebars and seat! Don't be a nut!

any of the 250 from the top bike company's all go over 240 km/hr. For the first couple years and the weight is manageable. Go for bike the dealer is going to give the longest warranty

I would stay more around a 250cc bike as my first. if you were wanting to get into street mikes, the kaw ninja is a good start but i would get one that is used and not modified for they are cheap and have a quick resale.

the best sport bike for a beginner is the kind of bike that's USED, light in weight, and not too much power. now, with that being said, it's up to u to choose what model u want.

Used Kawasaki Ninja 250. Ride it around for a few months. Then sell it and get yourself something bigger.
