I'm looking to upgrade the 40gb hard drive on my laptop to a 120gb. The 2 models that I've narrowed my search down to are Western Digitals WD1200VE and Toshiba's MK1234GAX. As far as reliability and performance go which company should I go with?

I personally like the WD, it's fast, reliable and also WD tend to be quiet which is nice for watching movie files or listening to music.

Both companies have been manufacturing Hard Drives for many years. The WD appears to be a higher performance product. As far a reliability goes I suspect that would be determined by how the user treats the laptop over how reliable the either manufacturer manufactured the hard drive. If they work when they show up they should work for many years, as long as they are not dropped.

Haven't used Toshiba drives before but Western Digital has always done well with me. If you expand your search out for any reason, I'll throw a negative vote for Maxtor. I have had more than my share of Maxtor drives crash on me and they are the one brand I will avoid over any other brand.

If you torture hard drives like I do with constant downloads and removal of software, I would recommend not using Western Digital. I have a preference for Maxtor in all six of my computers.

But that is something you need to decide.

for a laptop i would say theyre about equal .. they basically last until u drop the notebook ... for performance generally look at the rpm .. the faster rpm ones make a noticeable difference ..
