Now, I'm going to answer this, with full expectation of getting no points, because I'm not giving model numbers! The cameras, mi esposa has with her right now, and she's out and about!
She swears by Olympus (any Olympus), and sure enough, her old Oly has survived many bumps and even being run over by a pickup. The smart card, as they call it, works just fine in my HP laptop.
Her more recent camera is a Nikon, a smallish camera, with a surprising 10x optical. It cost (well we caught it on sale) $350. (Is that a good price in your terms?) Its SD card fits my PDA, my HP, our printer, and our phones.
My HP dz5000 laptop, a 15inch plasma screen, does a great job of displaying photos. It was $1600...now, I don't know if that's good in your terms, either.
Oh, and in all cases, no software required to handle the camera cards in the other devices.
