I think the most important thing is listening skills. But as sad as it is you also need to be able to stay unattached, in a field like Psych, you have to be able to distance yourself and make yourself a priority first or it just won't work.

First of all you need to be a good listener, more than anything. You need to be nonjufgmental and put your OWN ideals and values aside. If you are adamantly against drug users, you shouldnt be a social worker, because you will be dealing with this demographic. But if you are a good listener and be objective, meaning you will listen to what they are saying, then you stand a good chance. Social Workers dont make a lot of money, psychologists do. You can open your own practice as a psychologist. As a social worker you will work for an organization that pays you, and usually not that much. Good luck

Having life experience. The ability to see beyond the actions that people do. Having the ability to stand back and look at the whole situation and all perspectives. Knowing what it natural and any deviations from it. Being extrememly in touch with our natural feelings/emotions especially if you are male --since society ridicules all of us for 'feeling'.
Those are good starts. Of course it helps to be observant.
