It really depends all the components that you are looking for. If you are wanting an lower end system that will last a few years and you won't be doing anything that intensive on, you might want to go from a manufacturer. Dell's Vostro line is a good example of this.

Your expertise also plays heavily on this. Prebuilts will come with some warranty on the system. This isn't always true of building your own. So if you are confident you can do a good job, have knowledge of the parts you want, and want to customize and put in high-end components, you may be better off building your own.

Also, don't forget the Operating System in your price calculation. Prebuilts have this included, but building your own you may have to purchase a copy of Windows or use an Open Source OS.

You're better off trying to buy a pre-built with open options for upgrades in the future.

3 or 4 years ago, it was much cheaper to build your own PC, because you could pick and choose what you wanted and get it from places like computer shows at below retail prices. Now all the manufacturers are selling their stuff cheap.

You can get a prebuilt PC for less money because the sellers of these PCs buy their parts in bulk so they get a better price. I don't mind spending the money to build the PC though because I get exactly what I want without all the bloatware from the manufacturer. Also, then I have all the information and know-how to take the PC apart and upgrade parts or fix it.

For the parts you will get, it's much more economical to build your own. You can choose EXACTLY what you need so you won't pay for extras that you don't. I have been building mine and other people's for quite a few years now.
