I am very confused in routers and servers! I know what a router does! But I am very confused with servers! My question is: You have to be connected to internet to connect to a server, or you can connect them together through a cable? How about the server, does it have to be connected to the internet or how is it made this network? How many types of networks there are??? I AM VERY CONFUSED, PLEASE HELP ME!

Well, technically a server is just a computer that sits there and provides some kind of service when requested. You can have a server on your network that just provides a place to store data. Or you can have a server you connect to through a provider that provides access to the internet.

A network is computers linked together. If you have two or more computers that are able to communicate with each other you have a network. If they are all in your home or one location its called a local area network, or LAN.

You can have a router in your network that distributes incoming data to the computer or device that it goes to so your computers share one common communication port.

Network Administration is simply a way to set up your network.

There are two parts here.
First, a server is an application that preforms a service. For example a Web Server is an application that is installed on a computer. The application listens on port 80 for any other computers requesting something on that 'server' on port 80. you do not have to be connected to the internet to run a server. YOu can install a web server application on your home box, then open up a browser window and type in http://127.0.0.1 to use the web server application on your box, with out any network connctions
...but if you are the only one who can connect to your box, that doesnt' to anybode else any good. So we want to hook your computer, with the web server application, to the internet using an Internet service proider, a Network interface card, and ehternet to the Internet so anybody who knows your internet address can connect to your computer and use the web server application to view your website.

A server can be any computer at all. All that a server does is act as either a repository for files or for programs and the like. In order to be considered a "server," a computer should be on a network and have other computers access it for its resources. A server does not necessarily need to be connected to the Internet.

Do you mean how many network TOPOLOGIES are there?
