autism and not the often accompanying mental retardation. I'm looking for studies that address autism only and have excluded candidates that also suffer from mental retardation. Thanks.

Defeat Autism Now (DAN) is a very good research institute in the causes and cures for Autism. As a teacher of children with Autism I love to see parents and others taking steps to look for information on curing children with Autism but remember that techniques don't work for every child so keep looking. There is not a cure all yet but there are things that work for different children. The last website gives a lot of information also on curing autism also and the different strategies that are being used right now.

Autism is often paired with other issues, but mental retardation is a sweeping term and not a terribly accurate way to describe what you are looking for.

If you want studies that focus solely on autism, in children with no learning or cognitive delays, the majority of the studies you would

find would be focused on children with Asperger's or high functioning autism. Will the data shows that children with autism range the scale in intelligence, just like many other children, the impact the difficulties with communication ( and that is one of the deciding factors in autism...social and communication delays/disorders) that are inherent in autism often make it difficult to determine the cognitive developmental levels easily. Very few studies working with a range of children on the spectrum would be able to accurately pinpoint where inherent intelligence begins and where the scores are effected by communication issues. Even the adaptive IQ tests that have been used for the past decade are proving inaccurate because they are all based (on some level) on verbal communication. There have been recent studies showing that other forms of testing with children with autism provide better and more accurate information as many children with minimal verbal skills are actually of average to above average intelligence.

If you are talking of children who along with autism have one of the genetic disorders commonly associated with mental retardation , you should be ablet to find information from studie seperating the two,
