Unless you're a "beauty is skin deep" kind of person, the cosmetics of a computer don't to it's performance. It sounds as if you probably damaged the hard drive, and possibly the motherboard or anything else inside of the case.

I would contact dell and tell them what it's doing. The tech on the phone may either have you ship them the laptop or send one of their technicians out to your home to take a look if it can't be fixed over the phone. If they question the damage on the case (scratches or a slight chip in the plastic), just tell them that you sat it down on some rough surface; if the case is cracked and they don't offer to fix it for free, you'll want to replace it by getting the part off of ebay instead of getting it through dell, but only after your warranty period has expired (replacing the case voids the warranty, and most of the parts inside of that laptop are much more expensive than the notebook's outer shell ever would be).

It should not be that expensive to replace the HD, which appears to be damaged. I'd contact a local laptop service provider and have them repair it. You should also get them to back up the data, if you are unable to do so yourself. If you have a friend that is technically inclined, they most likely could do this for you and you could buy a replacement HD on www.ebay.com. I suspect the total cost would be around $150.

It sounds like you cratered the hard drive.

Back up all your data now. Hopefully you will not have lot anything too important

You might want to consider a different brand from Dell for your next laptop:

Less than a year warranty? that really is not very good.

If it was dropped, the hard drive might be bad also.

You can check out Ebay for parts, there are usually laptops that have a bad motherboard or something that you can use for parts.
