What is a death rattle and what are they used for?

My sister is in college and she has this really freaky roomate. Today she walked in the room and lying on the desk was a death rattle that her roomate had made and instructions on how to make them. Just wondering if anyone knew what they are used for...

A death rattle is a noise people make before they die when they can't get enough air.
