but can you really forgive and forget...once someone does something that requires forgiveness, can you really forget they did it, and how is your relationship with that person afterwards. Is it as strong as it was before the incident, or weaker...

So here's a two-part question... Can you truly "Forgive and Forget" and do you continue with the relationship as it was before?

I honestly can't, I can put it aside and move on but I'll always remember, and will seldom trust as much as I did before...

It depends on the person itself.
You can probably forgive your spouse after he cheated, but I don't think you will completely forgive him as well as forget what he did.
You'll forgive in the sense that you wanna make it work again and still be with him but you really won't forgive him for being unfaithful. You'll forget when everything is well and you both are happy, but as soon as an argument or a trust issue rises you will bring everything back up and that is something you will never get by.
I am the same, I would never really "forgive and forget."

I've been known to use the phrase. It's really a misnomer,
although we can forgive through some heartflt effort, I question
the possibility of literally forgetting any incident (before
dementia sets in.).

It takes me a very long time to forgive someone but I never forget what they have done to me.

If you practice compassion then you will learn how to forgive AND forget. It doesn't mean that your memory is erased but real forgiveness means that you don't focus on the bad memory and you don't let that interfere with future dealings with that person.

Forgive - yes. Forget - no. You learn from your mistakes by remembering them, NOT forgetting them.
