Could "running hot" be related to or cause error messages we are now getting from time to time that says we have a malfunctioning USB?

i doubt thats ur problem .. sounds like he was just jabbing his jaw ... try uninstalling ur usb from device manager then reboot .. if ur running xp make sure u have sp2 installed ..

Usually all that means is that it has good signal strength coming in off the cable. The connection is "hot".

That could be...try plugging it into a different USB port, or (ideally) plug it into the Ethernet port on your computer (if you have one).
