It seems a lot of americans harbor ill feelings towards iranians for storming our embassy and holding hostages for a long time. But why were Iranians harboring ill feelings against the USA back then?

Pretty much because we subverted their country and installed a famously brutal dictator.

I wish they'd just get over it. I mean, we had our best interests in mind. Couldn't they see that?

DSome people!

sorry for the sarcasm. Why don't Americans get that when we do covert things to countries, and they find out, they have every RIGHT to object, in whatever fashion they choose.

Supposing some other country, or a corporation, decided to stage a quiet coup in the US, and install a new leader. Would we object, if we learned about it?

Damn straight. And we'd remove the plant from office.

The hostage incident was tied to the U.S.freezing Iranian assets held by U.S. banks.Nothing more nothing less. The incoming regime wanted access to what it believed to be the national assets of Iran and when that access was denied, they incited the Iranian people into a mob that decided to hold the Americans in the embassy hostage in exchange for the release of those assets.Hostage crises stretched on for 444 days due in part to the U.S. policy of non negotiation with terrorist or rogue governments.

Simple - The U.S. supported the Shah of Iran and he was somewhat of a dictator, that and the U.S. support of Israel and the inherent hatred of the Jews by Muslims. I, however, believe that while the U.S. has made mistakes in their handling of problems on the world stage, it has done so for the right reasons. That's not a blanket excuse for bad policy/behavior mind you - just a retort for the all too common "blame everything on the U.S." answers that dominate the responses to questions like this one.

Now, according to a book I read on the subject, nearly 70% of Iranians oppose their current form of government but they are powerless to change it - maybe they should storm the Mullahs...oh wait, the Mullahs control the military now so helpless civilians would be slaughtered, never mind. Or...maybe the U.S. should covertly support a revolution in an already unstable dictatorship.

Iran was ruled by a dictator, the Shah. The Shah had the backing of the US. The Shah was letting US oil interests rob the country. The people of Iran wanted a fanatical religious cleric, the Ayatollah, to run the country. They overthrew the Shah and took the American diplomats, who were in the country as hostages.

Frank's 1/2 right, but it goes beyond that.

When the Shah was sick the U.S. allowed the Shah into the U.S. for medical care. This happened after the Shah was deposed and has gone into exile and some Iranians felt that because of the U.S. sheltering the Shah that we were planning another coup d 'etat in Iran.

Iran was once a modern, secular developed country. In 1979, th Ayatollah took charge and reverted the country to a fuedal medeival culture based on dogmatic extremism. They've hated the West ever since.

The US is partially responsible too for backing Iraq and Saddam Hussein in the 1980s against Iran, and later back Iran against Iraq, a normal trend of putting our nose where it doesn't belong.

Americans don't have ill feelings for Iranians, only United Statesians do, we are a small minority of Americans.

The US imposed the Sha of Iran way back in the 50's, he ruled that nation with a fist of iron and killed hundreds maybe thousands. Also he was maintained in power there by the US, so, when the Ayatollahs came around looking for vengeance it was the United Statesians they attacked.

Probably because we assassinated their democratically-elected leader and replaced him with a dictator.

And the U.S.' unwaivering support of Israel and the presence of our military bases scattered around the middle east.

Just off the top of my head. And that's not getting into the whole distrust people have for cultures/religions that differ from their own.
