I have not seriously played with Vista. I am happy with XP on the systems I use.
From what I have heard:
The security features are a real pain. Asking about every application that tries to do anything. Possibly leading to worse security because everyone just clicks O.K. to everything.
A major resource hog. Especially the 'cool' aero features. These really suck up the video memory as each window gets it's own memory map.
I have heard that they actually started on SP1 before the release date.
So as far as I can tell, Microsoft has released a new OS that is buggy, took too long to get here and considers glitz more important than security. Quelle surprise!

As with everything it depends. Personally, I always sway my customers to use XP because everything works with Windows XP... Vista, on the other hand, only accepts about 35% of software and about 45% of hardware.
So if you're looking to use programs like Rosetta Stone, Morrowind, Tune-Up Utilities, or anything else that is known to depend on DirectX 9 (the video rendering system of computers 2000 NT through XP Pro), then you'll find that they don't work with Vista.
Thats right, you can pay close to a thousand dollars for a program like Rosetta stone, only to have Vista reject it. Worse still, you'll never know what will and will not compat with Vista because the hardware differences in laptops and desktops effect compatability in about 60% of Vista software.

I had windows xp pro on my notebook i bought last year. I bought a new notebook a week ago with vista on it. The only thing different about vista is the security(slightly better) and its GUI(the graphical user interface). The colors and layout of the system is neat but I'd rather have my xp pro back on my new notebook. Basically microsoft took windows xp and tweaked it, found a couple different ways to do things and are charging people a ton of money. Not worth the money.....

It really depends on your system and if you are going to be playing games. Vista isnt slower than XP if you set it up correctly. Vista will run just as fast at XP if correctly configured. I would say if you are not playing games and dont need DX10 then you dont really have to upgrade but Vista is really nice and the layout is great. Its alot more user friendly and looks much nicer. You also cant take the advise of a lot of users on here because most people make decisions on hear say and past experiances instead of current experiances and I can say that Vista isnt really all that buggy compaired to any other OS that has been released. Its a new OS so of course there are going to be bugs. Vista has come a long way and I honesty can recommend it...
EDIT to the person below me Tuneup Utilites works with Vista, there was an update that fixed it :P Marrowind also works for me along with Oblivion...

You'll hear other opinions here. Give points to the majority. I've heard some folks, though, are asking for new PCs with XP even though by default new PCs come with Vista...I personally am happy with XP, but then, I've never seen Vista, so I'm not making a reasoned choice.

Your laptop probably won't handle Vista very well even if its "Vista Ready". If you feel a real need to drop XP get Linux.

I would wait until SP1 comes out and see what it fixes first. You may have to wait till SP2 comes out if SP1 doesn't repair the "bugs" being reported. Right now I'd just wait.
