I have been having problems accessing some programs. I keep getting the following message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I do not know what it means or how to fix it. Any ideas would be grateful. I had to do a repair of XP, due to viruses and the message has been coming since. People keep telling me to run scans - done them, clean; go into safe mode - do not want to do anything without assistance, in case I do something wrong. I do not know what to do.
Thanks in advance.

All the users are administrators. As I did a repair, I do not think there are any restore point to go back to. The problem has been here since Monday.
I have run CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG, AdAdware - nothing came up.

Here's a list of error messages that I have been getting. It might help.

Everytime I try to reinstall Office 2003, here's the message I get before it finishes
"Microsoft Office 2003 Setup
Error 2932. An internal error has occurred (C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER\{91E30409-6000-11D3-8CFE-015004838C9}\xlicons.exe 5). Contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\PSS10R.CHM"
I'm guessing this is why the icons do not appear.

Permissions message
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

Startup message
"RUNDLL
Error loading
C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll"

After you repaired XP you might have created a different user.
If you must access a file or a folder that you do not have access to, you must take ownership of that file or folder, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab. Read -

You might not be an administrator of your computer. You might be on a user account that has limited rights to open things. Try logging/changing your account type from user to administrator. If that doesn't work run a system scan(spy sweeper) to check for viruses. You can always go to a restore point from your previous settings before this happened.

I would suggest to get rid of all the confusion, backup everything you want and instead of doing a repair just reformat and reinstall Windows!

If that does not work than you will know its not Windows it is something else.

Try downloading ccleaner from ccleaner.com and use the registry option to scan for issues on your pc it fixes them and gives you an option to backup your files aswell maybe that might do the job
