Were highly divided,
it's the economy that keeps us together,
we have to deal with people we like and hate daily.

Yes I do believe we are divided, but the question is to what degree. Most people base their opinion of this on something they see on the Internet, or in some poll somewhere, but what they fail to take into account is this. People say things behind the veil of anonymity afforded by mediums like the Internet which they would never say in actual face to face conversation with others. I think there are real dangers if the divide continues to grow, but I also believe that something will bring us together again. When the chips are really down Americans almost always find a way to pull together for the common good. Thus the statement you quoted. "United we stand, Divided we fall". As for why the divisions exist, they are mostly political and too numerous to list, but they are also transient in nature. They will fade and be replaced by other issues as time passes.

You see a concentration of division on YA but the country in general is not all that divided. If necessary we will stick together as we did on 9/11. I doubt anyone could ever change that. Dissent and difference of opinion are what makes and keeps a democracy strong. We see that our democracy is strong and getting stronger as we force ourselves to look at tough issues. We drag others into the process kicking and screaming but they are important to make it work. Once they get used to being a part of the process we see less dissent and difference of opinion but they still must exist. People don't participate and than say why don't they do something about this or that. In a democracy it is WE not they.

We are totally divided. Conservative/Liberal, Republican/Democrat, Caucasian/African-American/Hispanic/Asian/Native, Male/Female, Redneck/Yankee. Part of the reason we are divided is simply biology, you can't do much to change that. The other part is we allow our government and the media to keep us segregated (this is the part we can do something about but for some reason don't). Another piece keeping us divided that we can control is tradition (people cling to their traditions).

We are divided and the reason is because no one is willing to compromise. As long as people dont find a mutual ground to compromise on we are going to stay divided.

Big-time divided.
The urban areas are full of collectivists and the rural areas are filled with individualists.
The two cannot get along indefinitely without something boiling over.

We're focused on fighting about partisan nonsense. It's all just a smokescreen to distract us while rich, privileged elitists in both parties swindle us.

Yes. Because the NEOCONS plan has always been to divide and conquer! They make up wedge issues that they don't really care about (abortion, gay rights, etc...) and us it to distract the general public while they strip away our rights!
