If you were out in the middle of the ocean with your aging mother and a very young son, a freak wave capsized your boat and you have only a very small lifedraft and you could only save one of the two.

Who would you save, and why and what culture are you influenced by?

This question was ask by an European philospher, do you know his/her name and origin?

note: the wording is nowhere near axact but the scenario is.

I would definitely save my son - as my mother would want me to carry on the bloodline of our ancestors. I would want to also, as hard as it would be to watch my mother perish, my son has a lot more time left on the earth than her. He has more opportunity to make a difference in the world than my mother. I am a white, Holocaust survivor's descendant from Poland. I was born American and raised with strong family values.

peace ♥ happiness

One person including yourself?

If that were the case, I would save both and sacrifice myself.

If I could only save one NOT including myself, I would choose the child. Both my mother and myself would have lived good lives and don't fear death. The child still has a lot to live for and to see and do. I have seen and done enough.

I am influenced by my parents that were self sacrificing to their kids. They gave up a lot for us. They were influenced by their religious background and the Catholic church. I am not religious but still believe self sacrifice is the ultimate gift you can give.

If my mother were alive, I would give my life for her in a heartbeat. I'd have to knock her out to do it because she wouldn't allow me to but none the less, I would do it.

Probably my very young son because he is my baby. I love my mom too. I'm not influenced by a culture but I guess I'm influenced by my bear totem.
