It by Stephen King is the scariest book I have ever read. It's a little on the gory side though. The Shining was scary too, but not as much. Try reading Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. It was a good book, but not too much gore. John Saul is a good author to read if you don't like a lot of bloody stuff also. Just don't read The Devil's Labyrinth, it was his worst book. I have recently been reading some short stories by H.P. Lovecraft, and they're pretty freakin' scary too!

i'm sorry everybody it incredibly is offering you with crap solutions. I somewhat have an certainly answer for you. i'm an incredible fan of horror novels and that i've got study quite quite some. they have in no way given me nightmares or scared me too risky yet after i grow to be as quickly as 13, I study Stephen King's "The Shining" and it grow to be as quickly as frightening to me on the time. i latterly did a undertaking in my Humanities type and that i chosen Stephen King. He claims that possibly the main annoying novel he wrote grow to be as quickly as "puppy Cemetery" which i haven't gotten around to. i'm a stronger Dean Koontz fan than i'm a King fan yet Koontz does not quite come out with novels that shield me wide awake. yet once I had to % a heavily annoying novel from Koontz, it is "The Taking". i wish which you will get around to reading those.

For a good easy to understand scary read, it is hard to find anything better than Stephen King. The Shining, Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Stand, and a lot of others are the first to come to mind.

I don't think any are really scary (but then again I don't think movies are either) However my favorite book is Gerald's Game by Stephen King. There isn't much gore, but is for the more mature person (not sure of your age). Dracula was also a very good book but very long.

"House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski. Deeply freaky, very cool, not terribly gory but really scary.
Close second: "Ring" by Koji Suzuki and the short story collection "Blood and Water and Other Tales" by Patrick McGrath.
"Misery" by Stephen King was pretty fun, though.

RED DRAGON. If you get bad dreams don't go near this one, you won't get past the fourth chapter... Thomas Harris did an excellent job on this one, written so we'll and detailed. The psychological thrillers always get me. When you read it the fear is palpable, you really feel like you are in the book.

When Rabbit Howls - real story! Not gore, scary. True life, sexual abuse book. Awful story, but amazingly written.
