It is never acceptable. Don't be fooled if someone laughs at himself or herself. I've done that because I supposed people would laugh at me anyway; it hurt when they did. Even when people make jokes about themselves, you don't have to lsugh, believing they mean these remarks.

I think people are far too cruel, even when they don't think they are behaving that way. Making fun of someone belittles you. Be a better person; act supportive of your friends and others.

Some might say to make fun of someone who makes racist or other types of remarks or jokes, but laughter could spark violence. I've heard of so many incidents that spiraled into violence because of mockery, a more accurate word to me since it takes the "fun" out of it.

You are mocking people. There's no fun about these actions. I cannot think of any situation where "making fun" aka mocking is OK.

Humor can be a good thing, but generally speaking, it's best to keep making fun between good friendships in which you know your buddies won't take your ribbing as anything other than just fun.

What I really dislike is when people say mean things, and then try to 'cover it up' or justify it by saying they were just joking. Sometimes the answer is, NO you really weren't.

It is NEVER proper to make fun of someone and make them feel bullied, uncomfortable, or self-conscious. I know there are situations people have in their jobs (cops, nurses, and other jobs dealing with public at their worst) where you cannot help but laugh, but leave the room before you explode and they know you are laughing at them.

Sometimes it is o.k. to make fun of yourself-tell funny and embarassing stories (in good taste) to friends and co-workers you trust and have a little laugh. This is just good clean fun in my book.

I think it is very juvenile and ignorant of people to sit and make fun of everyone who walks by. In my opinion, those kind of people have a lowered self-esteem and are lowering themselves even further.

Imagine your confidence as a Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese. Every time someone makes fun of you, it's like they're taking a bite out of your Quarter Pounder. Soon enough, it will be gone, and the f&@#er, who ate it will feel more full (of his self).

If you're still aching to do it, I suggest you check why it is you feel so empty, you gotta nibble on someone else's Quarter Pounder.

Get a life,
Tali

Only when that person is laughing at themselves do you even start to make fun of someone, but -- to be honest -- I believe even that type of "making fun" can hurt someone subconsciously.

My initial reaction to this question was to say 'never'. But after considering it, I think if a person is open-minded and the teasing is not mean, but loving or silly, and the person is already laughing at themselves, I think it's ok.
