My maternal grandparents had 16 kids. My paternal grandparents had 11. Not so any more - can you imagine having that large a family with today's cost of living?

On both sides of my family, there were five kids each. I'm sure that was enough, but 11 and 16? Those mothers must have been saints!

My maternal grandparents had 5 and my paternal had 4. No, I can't imagine that large a family, but back then all pitched in to work and help the family survive.

My maternal grandparents had 3 children and my fraternal grandparents had 4 children.
I have 2 children, now adults.
My daughter has 2 little boys, age 2 and 4, and she would like to have a total of 4.

I've noticed lately in my suburb many young families with 4 children and there are some families with more. Maybe the tide is changing again. Wait until all of these little ones are of college age.

Like you I came from a family that followed the teachings of the Bible and they went ". . . . forth and multiplied". My maternal grandmother had 17 and my paternal grandmother had 13 - I had 5 and that was 50+ years ago. No I cannot imagine what it would be like to have to feed such a large family! Mine was large enough and with the way the world is today - - - I think it unhealthy to bring more children here!!!!!!!
That's just my opinion.

We almost match. My maternal grandparents had 16 children. My paternal grandparents had 12.

BUT! My father's father apparently "sowed his wild oats" widely. He had 3 different families all at the same time...the one in Saskatchewan that my Dad came from. One in Manitoba, and one in Alberta. And he named all of his kids with the same names in each of those families. The best that we can figure out was that he fathered almost 40 children (that we know about).

I've always thought it strange that my greatgrandparents had only 3 children, and my grandparents only 3 as well. Numbers reduced to 0, 1 and 2 children by the third generation. Think some familys simply are too busy working to raise a lot of children.
