It is a Wheel Bug (named for the wheel on its back.) It is considered beneficial in that it eats insects that are harmful to crops. But if you grab it (on purpose or by accident, working with plants) it stings. If you are working where there are a lot of them, it's advisable to wear gloves.

Wheel Bug, one of the assasin bugs. Be very careful about handling it - that beak delivers a very potent and painful bite.
