You HAVE to? Songs are usually creative and not too forced. What do you have to write the song about?

Most songwriters catch their creative ideas in a notebook, and work on fitting them into songs after their brainstorming process has finished. Also, if you get hit with an idea when you are busy, the journal can record the idea and you can get to it later.

First you need to identify an idea of your subject for a song. I'm assuming this one to be a love song. Then, try to get three or four important lines about the topic that mean a lot to you. Build the song lyrics around those.

As for melody, when you are in the mood to write songs or play music the melodies come to you. Either record them or write their sequence down if you can write music.

Here's an example of one of mine:

One Less Idiot

Hooligan doing one-oh-five
In his best friend’s car
Drives on a dare,
Devil-may-care
When he rolls it leaving the bar

Well, I say that’s one less idiot
One less idiot
One less idiot we have to worry about

Greaseball pushing the hard junk
Just two blocks from the school
Too late to retreat
When a client pulled heat
Found his corpse in the city pool

Well, I say that’s one less idiot
One less idiot
One less idiot we have to worry about

BRIDGE Gangs snuff other gangs, and are retaliated
Life term rapists killed, while incarcerated
Why do we ever feel sorry or strange?
Wasting our time and effort and change
Farewell, good riddance, it’s a small pittance
Of a tab they run high and won’t pay you and I

Each time it’s one less idiot
One less idiot
One less idiot we have to worry about

REPEAT CHORUS OUT

many people start by writing a poem. then as you write it/when you are done, say it over and over again and try to feel the rhythm and flow of it. finally, experiment singing it to different styles and in different patterns. it may take a little while, but you'll find something that fits. try recording into a little recorder so you don't forget it.

Another way is to start humming a tune, just whatever pops into your head, pick some phrase that fits it and build it gradually from there. Good luck!
