When do you use "catch up" and when do you use the hyphen "catch-up"?

I spell it "ketchup" and use it on french fries and burgers.

You can try to catch up to someone or you can play catch-up with them. The second example combined the two words into one noun, like a type of game.

Use the hyphen only when you are using "catch-up" as an adjective. e.g. "We were really behind - in a catch-up mode."
