I'm going to write an articule in school about police using the Tasers the way that they do. 240 people have died since the police force have gotten there tasers. Is there really a reason for this? The taser is supost to be an alternitive to guns and or pepper spray but I feel that this isn't the case. It's used as a weapon to instill fear in people. I'm pretty sure everyone has gotten them selves shocked at one point in there life. So we all know what it feels like. But imagine what it would be to have 50000 volts of eltricity going through your veins, to have you bodie give on you and not be able to move. Everyone has an intsinive fear of electrcution and the police are playing on that. These tazers are not used to make the world a better place they are used to force us into submission. Just the other day a friend of mine was telling me about a special ed girl that got Tazerd becasue she was getting "voilent". There are other means to get the girl to settle down.

You know it's actully legal for people to just lie there and have the police carry or drag you away. As long as your not becoming violent or anything. The don;t tase me bro was being an Asswhole I admit that. i don't care if i would be a criminal for not 'complying' the cops arn't God if I am i don't know protesting somthing and I don't want to move then they can't make me they'll have to drag me away. By the way what is up with these grown people trying to insult me because i don't have good spelling or grammer. I know I don't and I don't care. So pay attshoin to to question stupid heads.

Paul Harvey exposed the kid who got himself tasered so publicly, as a "professional" publicity hound who has people videotape him doing nutty things, so he can try to get them to go "viral" on various websites. Harvey said that the media had been successfully DUPED by the kid into thinking this was actually a newsworthy event.
(That kid must have a SERIOUS arrested-development problem.)

Over ninety 8 % of police contacts haven't any use of stress in any respect. Of the the rest a million%, the taser is purely between the thoughts used. Of each and all the taser usages, approximately 2% bring about harm. maximum of those injuries are from the autumn, as you won't have the capacity to administration your muscle groups. Taking all those statisitcs into attention, the opportunities of having injured by way of a taser are quite small. besides the shown fact that, police contacts the place each thing is going actual at the instant are not newsworthy, so the media concentrates of the very small share of controversial ones. this aspects an unfair representation of what number cases this is unquestionably used. the known for utilizing the taser is "acitive resistance or the risk of". this implies at this factor, the different thoughts are wrestling with the guy, or utilizing a baton. in case you circulate hands on, there's a fifty 5 % hazard the undertaking gets injury, and a 40 5 % hazard of injury to the officer. With baton there is an eighty 5 % hazard the undertaking is going to the wellness midsection. The taser won't be perfect, besides the shown fact that it statistically the main secure weapon they have.

I want to clarify a few points made in the above answers before going on. First, the misconception that the person at the Kerry speech somehow "deserved" or wanted to be tazered. The test for use of deadly force is an objective one without regard to the suspect or officer's intent. If I wanted a police officer to shoot me, he or she should not and should use that force necessary to restrain me.
Second, people HAVE died from a tazer. If I have a heart condition and I would live for 20 more years, does that mean that you did not kill me if you electrocute me and exacerbate that heart condition? I am sure the police officer that made that statement doesn't apply that same standard when considering the arrest of criminals. By that logic would a passenger in the car of a drunk driver not be an alcohol related fatality?
There were 270 tazer related deaths since 2001. There are 7 cases where a medical professional has directly linked the use of a taser to the death. There is no question that the tazer is an escalation of force one step below deadly force. MOST police departments treat it as such. On the threat matrix of those police departments who use one, the tazer is listed just below deadly force. Used properly, the tazer is a great alternative to deadly force.
The problem is that there are bad police officers. While most police officers are hard working individuals who do a great job every day, every profession has its bad apples. The good police officers need to stop sticking up for the bad ones. A tazer should be used ONLY when deadly force would otherwise be warranted.

If you want a good grade, you better look at both sides of the issue.
Not one single person has died from being tased. They die AFTER being tased. Electricity does not store in the body, so if the taser caused death, it would occur during the tase, not after.
The female in the wheelchair died of heart disease. Yes, disease. Do you really think a taser causes disease?
The vast majority of the other deaths are from drug overdose. These people already ingested a lethal amount of drugs, and their body is beyond repair, but death is not instant. They act violent and irrational during this time and are a threat to harm others.
I have to admit, the Gill video from Ohio was disturbing to me , and I suspect the officer overreacted. However, I don't have the facts so I won't pass judgement.
Which brings me to the next point... most these taser videos only show the interesting part, they don't show the whole story. And, all the videos I've seen, the person gets ample warning BEFORE they are being tased. So I'll give you a tip, if a cop says do this or I'll tase you, I would suggest you do it.
A taser is NOT an alternative to a gun. A gun is deadly force, and there is no alternative. It is an alternative to pepper spray and batons. Pepper spray takes at least 20 minutes to clear, and a baton almost always results in a trip to the hospital.
I saw a comment about cops using them less if they got tased themselves. Every officer on our department got tased. It wasn't required, we did it voluntarily.
I welcome your emails if you want more information. I will only give facts, not opinions.

"Maybe next time that idiot in Florida will listen to the cops when they tell him to do something. "
This sentence is what's wrong with this country. The "idiot" in Florida had his First Ammendment Rights violated. The Cops have no right to limit political speech. Their job is not to set up or enforce any type of limit on the free expression of political speech. Their job is to keep the peace, and the kid in Florida in no way threatened the Peace. He simply went over an illegal time limit decided by the Police.
Secondly, they tazed an unarmed handcuffed person. They were in the wrong, which is why they were placed on administrative leave.
I think a huge national review needs to take place, perhaps at the Supreme Court level on what circumstances a tazer can be used, if at all. My advice to the kid in Florida is to sue, and sue, and sue some more.

you should also include any reduction/increase from other forms of control, ie batons, pepper spray and compare.the guy in florida should have left when asked and he fully resisted being escorted out. proof on film. when on the floor he should have been still to be cuffed, he wasn't. most people that get tazed deserve it because they almost always resist arrest.not always but mostly. they could shoot the guy or go rodney king on him. maybe if the police just said please.240 out of how many tens of thousands of arrest. not that any number is good but what other options do the police have when a person refuses to be arrested. do a fair and balanced article from more than point of view. otherwise it is a commentary.

Where do you go to school Berkley? Ok so 240 people have died since police starting using tasers. What's your point? They didn't die from the tasers.
Go ahead and write your paper since you don't seem to be looking for information, references, or details.
Tell me this though. You said "I'm pretty sure everyone has gotten them selves shocked at one point in their life". Well everyone is still alive, and it is extremely more dangerous to get shocked with household current, then with a taser. I think there is less than .01 of an amp in a taser.

First of all, I hope you will spell better in your article than you did in your question. You say 240 people have died from being tazed, how many would have died if they had had to draw their weapons instead? In most instances, the taser is a non-lethal alternative to deadly force and should be used accordingly. It is used to save lives not take them. Maybe next time that idiot in Florida will listen to the cops when they tell him to do something.
"Don't taze me, bro!" LOL LOL LOL I loved that.

I totally agree with you. The police are out of control and need to be reeled in. It's hard to have any respect for policemen these days since the ones I've encountered all seem to have that bully mentality. I noticed that the police in the area where I live were all the bullies in high school who couldn't get a real job. There is a need for police in any area, but they are given way too much power, and it goes to their heads. They're abusing the power of the taser to be sure.

I think that not setting down after being told that you must or you will be tased by the authorities is crazy.
I think that anyone who has been told that they will be tased if they do not comply...and they still do not...gets EXACTLY what they deserve.
I think that you are another typical liberal blaming the innocent for the actions of the innocent.
edit: Sure the cops screw up, but at the moment right after they warn you, you do not have the right to resist. If you are wronged, you have legal rights of recovery.
