Will second the Elliott Smith recommendation. Very good stuff.

DeVotchKa is fun -- you might have heard them in "Little Miss Sunshine."

The Boy Least Likely To is a somewhat twee pop band from England. Though their sound is light and childish, their lyrics tend to be somewhat dark and a little disturbing.

Lydia is a fantastic band that not as many people have heard of. Their sound is soft and delicate, but never overly fay. There's always a lot of power behind it, and the interplay of female and male vocals is great.

Clair De Lune is fun if you want something a little more rocking, and Fall of Troy is mentally stimulating post-hardcore. (Seriously, they are close to the hardcore stuff.)

For older bands, look into Indian Summer and Boys Life, for stuff that rocks, Belle and Sebastian and The Innocence Mission if you want a poppier sound, and Over the Rhine and Mazzy Star if you like alt.country.

Also, can't recommend Leonard Cohen enough. The man is awesome.

The Matches is one of the best alternative rock bands out there right now, in my opinion. They're kinda weird, but they make amazing music, and they're so fun. I saw them at Warped Tour and instantly fell in love. Check out their songs "What Katie Said" and "Salty Eyes."

Daphne Loves Derby is great too. They're kinda indie rock/pop, and I guess you could say they sound like a cross between Death Cab and Plain White T's, but much much better. They just released a new album earlier this year, called Good Night Witness Light, which I think is definitely their best so far. Listen to "Cue The Sun" and "Hopeless Love" and "A Year On An Airplane."

Minus The Bear is great too. They also just put out a new album this year, just a few weeks ago in fact, called Planets Of Ice. They're kinda known for having really silly song titles, like "Lemurs, Man Lemurs," haha. Listen to their song "Knights," and also "We Are Not A Football Team" and "Hooray."

Meg & Dia is another really good band. A lot of their songs are based on books, which is really cool. For example, East Of Eden by John Steinbeck inspired their song "Monster." Their song "Cardigan Weather" is really good too, but kinda morbid, it's about a girl who poisons a guy and then sews him into a mattress after she finds out that he's been unfaithful.

You might also like:
Self Against City, Limbeck, The Last Goodnight, Anberlin, Cobra Starship, Silversun Pickups, Making April, Dear And The Headlights, Straylight Run, Copeland, The Rocket Summer, Funeral For A Friend, Chiodos, Hidden In Plain View, Wolf Parade, Halifax, Hit The Lights, All Time Low, and Sick Puppies.

Hope you find something you like! =]
