That depends entirely on what you value at this time in your life. New York has great culture and economic opportunity, not to mention public transportation. On the other hand, renting even a small space can be financially demanding to the point where you are forced into the rat race. After 13 years in the city, I moved away. I now live in a smaller city in the south with beautiful beaches and weather and own a two-bedroom house with a big yard. My mortgage payment, taxes, and insurance are together probably cheaper than what I would pay to rent a room in Manhattan. Besides that, I love my gardens, and at this point I wouldn't go back.
I would definitely say that New York is an ideal place to start a career, and later you will always have the option of relocating, bringing all of your skills and experience with you.

That's only because people buy into the stigma of living outside of the city. Living in NJ I can get to downtown NYC in 15 minutes, which is less time than it would take coming from the upper East Side. And I pay less than 1/3 rent than my friends in the city, and have a bigger apartment than any of them. Living in NYC is a status thing...there is much better living outside of the city, yet close enough to enjoy everything in it.

if you are coming from a small town it is a great experience for 2 years. the first to get the lay of the land and the second to really enjoy it.
your best bet is to get recruited by a new york employer. coming here is expensive, staying here even more expensive.
if you have graduated from college, check with your college to see if they have a club in the area to help you with initial questions.
alternatively, if you are from a large city stick with nyc as a place to visit.

You can have it! I'll take SW MO where I am now. Try a 2700 sq ft home in an established upscale neighborhood with mature trees and great neighbors for around $150k.

I visited 2 years ago, horrible place. I would never want to live there.
That's just my personal opinion though.

I live in N.Y. it isn't all its cracked up to be. Inpersonal, so much so that it can actually be a lonely place.
