start with really soft things, like bananas, really soft cooked carrots, those biter biscuits are good because they mostly just gum them they can't really get a piece off
He's bound to choke a couple times, just watch him closely.
My son started on finger foods at 6 months, he never really like me feeding him.

Whether he has teeth or not doesn't really mean anything. It's his gums he's going to be chewing with. The front teeth are not for chewing anyway, the molars are and they usually don't arrive until the second year. I would start him out with chunks of cooked carrot, apple, mango or sweet potato. What are his favorite foods? Gerber also makes fruit and veggie puffs (sold in a tall, cylindrical, yellow container) that are great for first finger foods. They melt in your mouth and actually aren't that bad! I found Cheerios a little too hard for my daughter at first. My daughter started finger foods at 7 months, she wanted to feed herself. I gave her whatever we had for dinner and just made sure it was small enough and soft enough so she wouldn't choke. Another great things is the Baby Safe Feeder. It is a mesh bag that you can put all sorts of things in (watermelon, banana, grapes, apples) that attaches to a handle the baby can easily grasp. The baby chews on the bag, but no chunks can get through that the baby can choke on. This is a great way for babies to learn how to chew and be safe at the same time. It was invented by a Dad whose child choked on a "safe" biter biscuit. Good Luck! www.babysafefeeder.com

You don't want to start giving him anything that he can choke on. He has to learn the chewing process. I suggest starting with the Gerber Puffs or Cheerios, as they will dissolve in his mouth but he'll try to chew with or without teeth yet. A crust end of a loaf of bread is another good thing, as he'll try to chew, but any pieces he gets will be small & not a choking hazard. Gradually move onto small pieces of soft foods (like bananas) and the #3 foods.

does he have teeth?? at least a few? start off with very small peices or with the cookies they have for younger babys and see how he does with that...make thick food by adding baby cearel to the baby food and see if he trys to chew on it...not to thick just a little thicker then it comes in the jar...usually finger foods are ok to give at about 9 months but that depends again on the child and the teeth they do need teeth to chew up foods....they have new product out that gerber makes they are called puffs. they are dried like a cheerio but they will almost disolve in there mouth my child loves them...

if your really that nervouse about it i found these things at zellers or walmart that are like a net with a plastic handle that you put the food in and the baby can chew on it and only tiny pieces come out small enough that the child wont choke untill they get the hang of the chewing on their own

Does your baby have any teeth?
Start him off by giving him a piece of banana and watch him to make sure he chews it. Then give him other foods. Usually they just gnaw at the food so keep a close watch.

If he has problems then just stick your finger in your mouth and pull the food out. 8 months is fine for finger foods, and he has the ability to chew, but all babies struggle at first judging how much to chew, when to swallow, and how much he can fit in his mouth, just be on hand to rescue him if he makes a mistake.

You just have to give him something and see how he does. Give him something soft if he doesn't have a lot of teeth yet, like a peice of a banana. Then gradually work up to things that are harder. Gerber makes great finger foods for babies, check out your local grocery store's baby isle. They have pasta, cookies, fruits and veggie wheels, cereal bars... tons of stuff. Just watch him, and see how well he does. Good Luck!

If he has teeth he can chew. The real danger is choking which is why most doctors recommend not feeding them solid food until they are at least a year old. If you are going to do it, make sure the items you feed them are soft and cut into small pieces.

Your baby should have some teeth by now. Buy baby biscuits n dont worry, your little boy would keep licking n playing with his biscuits n by then, the biscuits would be soft enough for him to eat n enjoy. Be confident.
