We had a storm a couple of nights ago that blew down a ton of walnuts off my tree. The husks are still green, with no cracks. Are they ripe? Will the husk still turn black so I can take it off? and will the nut inside be edible?
I just need to know if it's worth keeping them or if I should dump them in the woods and wait for the rest to fall naturally.

You will have to wait for the husks to turn brown and dry some, and then they will be ready. As the other poster suggested, handle with gloves, or the tannins in the husks will turn your skin brown for some time.

I hate to say this, but you are better off going and buying walnuts in the grocery store. You are looking at a lot of work for little reward when it comes to black walnuts.

Handle with gloves and put them in a hessian bag and hang them in the garage, the husks will turn black and split as normal. The nuts will be edible and well worth the effort as anyone knows that grows anything themselves, try pickling them or stir fry in a sweet and sour sauce

They will be fine, they were ready to fall anyway. The husk will turn black.

Both of the other answers are good. However, if you aren't careful when handling, you hands will be stained. This stain cannot be washed off, and must wear off. There is no danger, but your hands will look very dirty for several days

Put 'em in the driveway and run over them for a few days to shuck 'em. Let them dry out for a couple of months. My mother did it this way for YEARS! They will be fine! ;-)=
