i think he understands clearly, it's just that he night not want to have that kind of pressure put on his shoulders.

Try telling him. If he doesn't believe you he must have his reasons. Also it you guys know each other just by answers and not in the real. He might not want to put his hopes in something he believes can't be.

just let him know like you did for us here, say that you want him to be more open with you and you want to know his feelings and that anything he says is not going to offend you, no matter what it might be and that is because you really care for and love him.
