You're probably vaguely aware that our budget deficits and national debt are climbing, and that in the long run this is "bad" for our economy. It's similar to the way it would be bad for a household to continually run a deficit until their credit cards were maxed out and they had to declare bankrupcy.

The bottom line is that as a country we need to live within our means, or else there will be serious economic repurcussions down the line. So, we can choose to close our eyes to the problem or we can make the necessary changes to balance our budget and begin paying down our national debt.

Republicans love to trot out the argument that they can cut taxes without cutting spending, and that the economy will become "so healthy" that tons of extra tax revenue will be generated, which can be used to finance wars and balance the budget. This has never worked.

We must either reduce government spending, increase taxes, or more realistically do a combination of both.

Personally, i believe corruption in government (think contractors in Iraq) are wasting a lot of our money. I also believe entitlements should be reigned in a bit. And I believe retirees with a certain net worth (say $2 million dollars) should not be allowed to draw social security (after all it is meant to provide security to those who don't already have it). I also believe pork barrel projects should be cut and there should be a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution passed that gets slowly phased in over a period of ten or twenty years.

On the tax side, I believe the wealthy should pay more in taxes, simply because they can afford it without cutting into their lifestyle. A familiy of four, living on $30,000 per year is already extremely stressed economically. Paying more taxes for them means forgoing dental care for their kids or something like that. But for the family of four making $200,000 it just means a little less going into their kids' trust funds or into their investment funds, or only getting a new BMW every 5 years instead of every 4 years.

So, while i personally don't want higher taxes, I'm mature enough about it, and well-acquainted enough with economics (econ major) that I understand we are all owners of our country and collectively we must live within our means, even if it entails making tough choices.

No it means you want fiscal responsibility. The budget was balanced under Clinton.

Republicans will have to increase taxes if they are elected, but the burden will fall more on the middle class. In just 7 years. Bush has doubled the national debt, the entire amount the US has borrowed in all of its history. He's increased the "debt ceiling" at least 5 times. Basically the day is coming when revenue and available credit won't cover government spending. That means an increase in taxes is inevitable.

They think it'll be deeper in OUR wallets but not theirs. It has never worked out that way.

They also, despite all the evidence to the contrary, think that somehow the Bush tax cuts have "cost the government revenue" - - - - when in fact tax revenue is rising at 4X the rate of inflation.

I give you Westhill as an example. It's insane - it's like people after Copernicus insisting that you could sail off the face of th earth.

How do you define "want" as opposed to "need"??? I don't enjoy paying taxes but I do enjoy having the security and availability of services that those taxes provide. Voting for a Democrat will most likely mean an increase in taxes, but I would rather pay those taxes now and cut spending until our debt is paid so that my grandchildren and great-grandchildren will not have to pay for the choices we make.

Uh..WHO VOTED FOR ALL OF THE WARS WE ARE CURRENTLY IN!?!

You can't have wars and increasing the debt cap WITHOUT higher taxes and NOT go bankrupt!

And exactly how many times has Bush signed that it is Ok to raise the debt? It is 5 or 6 times in the past 7 years!

I wish a democrat can explain to me how a 300 billion dollar a year universal health care program Hillary is proposing is fiscally responsible.

Rufus, when that filthy rich bastard buys a new car every 4 years instead of 5, that means more cars get sold. That means more jobs at middle class wages. I don't understand why that is so hard to comprehend.

Your opinions are ignorant and outdated. The modern democrats aren't the tax-and-spenders of the past. Bill Clinton didn't raise taxes.

Regardless, it may be necessary for the next president - regardless of party - to raise taxes to pay for Bush's wars. The deficit spending of the last five years could cripple the country if not reined in soon.

Fiscal irresponsibility is a problem with both parties.

Higher taxes now under a democrat, or just push the deficit to your children with interest added under a republican.

What part of the republicans spend just as much or more than a democrat do you not understand.

I don't feel that way. We are in a huge deficit. Anyone who believes that taxes will get lowered while maintaining our current programs plus funding Iraq is wrong. There is no way to get out of debt unless we allow the tax cuts to expire. That's not the Democrat or Republican view point, it's just how it's going to happen.

I want a balanced budget. Borrowing money to pay our bills does not mean that we are paying less in taxes, it just means that we are not paying it NOW. Bush has put his policies on the backs of future politicians.

I would rather not have higher taxes however if we must raise taxes in a fair manner to balance the budget, that is something we should do.
