Just curious as to what inspired writers to begin the daunting task of putting words to paper. I was always a big reader as a child. In high school, I started with short stories that I strictly kept to myself. My imagination was, and is, very vivid. It was simply an outlet to tell my own little stories. As an adult, I finally realized that writing is one of the few things I actually ENJOY and want to take a stab at it. I doubt if it will make me rich (though there's always a chance). However, I just figured it was never too late to try and make a dream come true. I've started a fantasy novel and working on "refining" several of the stories I've written to submit to magazines. So I was just curious why others take the leap.

Elissa...couldn't agree more!!! Starting was hard. That was until I learned about an outline. Once I did that (ten pages in all)...it started moving. My problem now is that I have to keep on track with getting the whole thing down...without going back to "fix". I'm getting better at it. However, I still can't start a new chapter without at least tweaking the one before.

What inspired me to begin writing is my love of reading. It's very seldom that I don't have a book in my hands. The more I would read, the more interested I became in writing my own stories. I had the words in my head, so I decided to give it a try one day and I started writing everything down on paper. I do get writers block at times, but most of the time the words flow fairly easily for me. Now I have several stories written that I need to do a little more work on before trying to get them published and I'm working on a couple of novels.

Music is definitely a key factor in my inspiration train. I'm also really inspired by Twilight, not because of the characters but simply because how effective and easily Stephenie Meyer created the tension through the beginning of the book. So what I do is what until everyone is asleep (so about midnight or a bit later) read a bit of twilight, put on my iPod, open my curtains a little bit so the moonlight seeps through the gap and just start typing. It creates such an eerie atmosphere if you find the right music and it fills me with inspiration. It doesn't always make sense what I'm typing but then that's what I like about it. Once you feel like you can't keep your eyes open any longer and just close your laptop lid and go to sleep. Then, in the morning I open it up and see what I came up with. That way I've got a fresh pair of eyes and it sometimes feels like someone else had written what I was reading. I think it's because I get so tired while written so I fall into a sort of dream-like state and the music fuels my "dreams" so that makes my written unusual. But try it, it's good fun and produces some interesting results.

That's great on starting a novel! And a fantasy one at that! I'm really in to fantasy books and hopefully if you get published, I'll buy your books!

I'm not really sure what first inspired me to start writing....I do remember the day I started working on my first short story though. It was an assignment I had to do for grammar I think....That was when I was 6...and then when I discovered writing, I just could not stop! I started coming up with all these crazy stories and you would never see me without a notebook and pencil. I still bring notebooks wherever I go because I never know when an idea could suddenly pop into my head. I guess you could say I have a vivid imagination as well (one of my stories is about a teenager who can talk to animals!)....

Well, I'm not sure I helped that much, but good luck to you!

No, writing will probably not make you rich, but you'll save a hell of a lot of money on therapy.

I started writing because I had ideas I couldn't find in any book--and I ran out of good books to read. Starting when I was 9 or 10, I began daydreaming stories. I started physically writing my first book when I was 15. I have several books published now, but still have to work full time.

One of the strengths of being a serious writer is you go back and dig out all those traumatic events from your life and look at them again and analyze them before you give them to a character. It's the best therapy you can have because you are looking to not only use it, but to understand WHY it affected you the way it did.

I have to say, I'm impressed by your "origin story", I guess I'll call it. I've been down a very similar way with the private stories throughout high school and coming to the realization that writing is one of the few things in life that I thoroughly enjoy and have also come into the seriousness in which I wish to pursue it as a lifelong undertaking. Good luck to both of us ;)

As for the things that jumpstarted my inspiration as a kid:
Star Wars and Final Fantasy, of all things. Videogames, movies, and even comics have all been very stimulating influences on my imagination. In a way, they were the gateway that eventually led me to actually reading books and developing a love for the WORDS to express what goes on on the canvas of my mind.

So naturally, most of my attempts at writing are very sci-fi/fantasy heavy. My recent literary obsession is Orson Scott Card's Enderverse. Ursula Leguin's Earthsea series is a close second.

I don't remember any instigating experience or thought. I've just always been writing, practically since I knew how. I think it comes from having my imagination fed by books my parents read to me, then read myself, as I was growing up.

Writing is something I have to do. That's all there is to it for me.

Way to go on starting that novel. As some of the questions here on YA indicate, starting is sometimes the hardest part.

I'm an avid reader too. I guess I started writing because I got annoyed with the selections in libraries and bookstores. It was like all the really good books had been written before I was born. So I just got to thinking, "I bet I can do better than that!"

For me, it wasn't a question to start writing. I HAD to write. I had all these stories in my head that I had to get down. I create worlds and societies; the stories form around them.

It's a ton of fun.

Honestly, it never occurred to me NOT to write. When I was a child I wrote short stories (illustrated by me with crayons), and I continued to write through my adolescence into adulthood. It wasn't until college however that I began to seriously pursue writing as a career.
