I have a laptop and and a desktop, along with a crossover cable. I want to connect the two computers so that I can use their combined power on the laptop. My main goal is to run windows for gaming purposes. Is it possible and what would I need?

no.
you need a network OS such as microsoft advanced server.(not sure is MS works with shared CPU power)

or linux of some sort (will work with shared CPU)

but you need 3 machines.
1 to run the "network OS"
2 computers to share.

oh and a router...... not a crossover cable
