I am in my 4th and final year in BSc Biomedical Science at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland and was wondering if I am required to do a year or so of work before I am a fully qualified Biomedical Scientist (MLSO)?

Any other information/advice about a career in this field would be appreciated.

Hi, I am an experienced biomedical scientist (BMS) and yes you will need to work in a lab for a while before you become fully qualified or state registered. That is usually acheived in under a year by completing a portfolio.

You will then need to complete a specialst portfolio to move up the scale, and then an MSc if you want to move up even higher. Most hospitals will pay for you to do this as day release/block release if you're a promising BMS

Forensic Scientist. That sounds the most interesting and would take less time then going to school for a zillion years to be a biomedical scientist. I dont really know the answer to your last question though.

My dad was a MLSO Grade 4 before he retired three years ago. Things may have changed since he retired but certainly when we was still working a newly graduated Biomedical Scientist still had to do a year in a lab as an MLST.

After the year the MLST had to then take exams before they were promoted to MLSO Grade 1.

Suggest check with the Health Professions Council (formally CPSM) who should be able to give you a definitive answer.
