I am not a doctor, so i am not qualified to answer. However, I seriously doubt a dilated ureter could have anything to do with down syndrom or any other similar problem. The only problem a dilated ureter can be connected to is urination-connected. Remember that 1. your child has 2 ureters, so a blockage is not so likely, 2. since the problem has been spotted they will manage to monitor and control the situation, so don't worry, 3. it is probably too soon and the ultrasound may have shown something that is not exactly so or that may change by the time the baby is born. So don't worry, there is no reason to worry, at least yet. It is actually good to have suspicions, so that the doctors can check thoroughly the kidney functions with a blood test and prevent any damage!

It is called Vesicoureteral Reflux. I don't really think that it is associated with Downs - my daughter had it and she does not have Downs or any other disorder, to my knowledge (she is 10 now). Hers healed itself when she was between 4 and 5 years old.
There is a ton of information available on the internet about it.
In our case, specifically, it seems to have been a genetically passed birth defect (her cousin had the same). There are varying degrees of reflux.
I hope that this helps. For us, it has not been all that big of an issue, although she did have a lot more UTIs when she was younger (this lead to the investigation and finding of the reflux). We have to be careful that she does not drink brown sodas or anything with caffeine - and she should get an ultrasound once per year to make sure that there is no scarring. Otherwise, really no issues to deal with on a daily basis.
Good luck.

it's urinary reflux. My mom has had it all of her life. They may be able to go in and fix it completely very easily. What happens is the urine moves back up into the kidneys and the bladder when it shouldn't causing infection. It's not completely uncommon. My mom was unable to have hers fixed completely but keeps it under control by taking a daily antibiotic to prevent infections. It's not the end of the world and not life threatening unless you let the infections become out of control. Some doctors are trying to move away from daily antibiotics as a preventative however in my opinion this is a huge mistake. Without them my mom would have lost at least one kidney by now so if your baby does have it you will just need to be vigilant with his health care.

One of my friends twins has this condition. He was put on antibiotics soon after birth & has been going to dr.'s just to make sure it doesn't get larger (2mo). My friend found out that her husbands nephew has the same condition (he's about 5 or 6) and hasn't needed any special treatment.
So it could be genetic... call your doctor and ask for more info.
Check out the link... sounds exactly like what was described.

I'm sorry, I've never heard of it but if I were you I would call the doctor to talk to him or go schedule 30 minutes with him so he can explain in detail what this means. I know I would need all the information in order to relax because you don't want to have to worry during your entire pregnancy.

hydronephrosis.
yes its common in baby boys.
my son has this, and we foundo ut about it at my 20 week ultrasound.
we were completely freaked out.
i had a second ultrasound the next week, and they were pretty much normal. im actually having a 3rd ultrasound on tuesday for a nother look.
a genetics counsler told us it is sometimes seen in babies with downs, but our little guy doesnt have it. she made the situation worse on us by telling us this. dont worry, i couldnt find any information to back it up.
sometimes it just has to do with thier growth. and they sort of need to "catch up" with themselves.
also, its nothing youve done wrong. sometimes it just happens. of course you feel like the worst person in the world.
this is our first baby, and i just couldnt understand why it was happenening to us especially since people who dont take care of themselves and never go to the doctor have perfectly normal babies.

My neice has this....she's 4 now and it wasn't found till she was 3. She is fine but a bit more prone to infections....she's very clever and happy and sociable....it's just a little blip. My sister says that the long term effects can't really be predicted but she is not very concerned about it so I think you'll be fine. It's good that in your case it has been spotted....things may turn out normal anyway....another friend of mine was pregnant and they said her baby would be very brain damaged....result? One pefect baby...no damage at all. Good luck.

Sounds like your doctor already gave you a good explanation for what is going on. Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR) is when the ureter is dialated and urine goes back in to the kidney.

I found this website. It looks like it has alot of information. I personally don't know anything about that. I just did a search for dilated ureters in fetus.

hope it helps and God bless you and your growing family.
