We're prego with our second. Our son turns 5 next month. We had an interview with the nurse at 7wks last week. We were with her for a little over an hour going over family and health history. I also had lab work and urine test done. This coming Monday at exactly 9wks, I have two appointments, the 1st early in the a.m. for a sonogram and the 2nd in the afternoon with our doctor. What should we expect at both?

For my first doctor's appointment, they did the family history and health questions and lab work that you've already done. If you haven't had a recent pap smear, the doctor will do that at your appointment. The doctor will also do an internal exam. Nine weeks is probably too early to hear the heart beat, so that will wait till your next appointment. The doctor will also go over the sonogram results and confirm your EDD. He or she will go over your lab work results if they are back already. The doctor will also answer any questions that you have. Feel free to ask anything and everything!

For the sonogram, since you are 9 weeks, it will be a transvaginal sonogram. You'll empty your bladder first (they will likely take a urine sample here, too). Then you insert a probe into your vagina to do the sonogram. They usually turn on a monitor for you to see the baby. It will be very small at this point. You'll see the heartbeating and the technician should tell you the number of beats per minute. The technician usually gives you some prints to keep.

Congrats!

I never met with a nurse. I have the some OB from when I had my daughter so I didn't have to give my history all over again and my doctor does almost all of my ultrasounds. Expect to get examined completely (pap smear and some feeling around to feel your uterus) by your doctor and determining on the person doing your sonogram it may be vaginally or over the stomach. Good luck!

They usually try to listen for a heartbeat..but they may not cause it may still be too early and the baby may still be low.I didn't hear my baby's until the 13th week. They ask you a lot of questions about you and your spouse and get a lot of bloodwork and a pap.Sometimes they'll even do a sonogram and give you prenatals and an estimated due date.
