Oh, sweetie, that's not an easy Q, is it? My birth Father & my Mom divorced when I was two... I saw him a lot, 'til we moved out of state... then in the summers, (he died in "85...) He was always good to me, but I didn't KNOW him..exactly... I think you have to be older before that happens...( perspective and all) My STEPFATHER, now... that's another story -complicated... I "picked up" my stepfather in the lobby of a movie theater when I was 3. He & my Mom married when I was 5... he & I were a love match 'til I was 12... then he stopped speaking to me -we had an argument & I hurt his feelings... apologies didn't work... so for the next -age- or so, it was not! a love match. I honestly grew to despise! him. He & my Mom had a son; my brother & I are very close. My"Dad" thought the sun rose & set, etc. I pretty much grew up without a father... A teenage girl needs one. Up until about 6 years ago, I felt this way: He and my Mother were happy. My brother loved his Dad very much. My take was: If he dies; he dies... (my Mom died in '99.) I was a big help with her illness and her death was a huge blow to ALL of us. Things eased some between my "Dad" & I... then he became very ill. I moved in with him, and looked after him until his death 3 years ago... He left EVERYthing! to my brother... (not the point, except it clarifies his position nicely, I think...) I would never have believed I would care enough to go through all that I did, so he could remain in his home, but I did, and I was happy to do it. I owed him. How do I feel about "Dad"? I don't know. I honestly don't know. I understand him now.... better than I did growing up... Stilll... I was a CHILD. He was an adult. -?- He clearly had problems of his own. He definitley created problems for me, that are ongoing. I do not trust men. There are/have been exceptions. (Always with me holding my breath; waiting for them to turn on me..) I can tell you this: I resent! the holy hell out of him! I don't know if I hate him any more. I don't know if I loved him. There is a huge spot marked turmoil" there. I am clear on this: I resent! him, more than I can say.
So! How've YOU been? }:>
(Gonna cut you a break below in "source" so you don't have to go though all that above...)

You know Absol, somebody once asked a question about fathers being right. A lot of answers made it clear our fathers weren't so great. Then that person did another question and said how sad it was. He was right. I read through that list and it was very sad. I do not like nor ever did like my father.

The person who asked those questions has answered yours here. He said how lucky he was to have a great father and I believe it.

Both. I hate him for the way that he treated me growing up and the hell that he put me through. He ruined a lot of my childhood and though he was never physically abusive, hurt me a lot. On the other hand I love him too. I can see past his actions and see a sad, tortured man inside. I forgive him and love him.

Unfortunately, my father died when I was nine, but I was daddy's little girl. He was my everything. The first tattoo I got is a tribute to him. I'll never stop loving him.

Well, I guess you'd hate your father if he took inappropriate liberties with you in your childhood...

But as for me, I LOVE my dad. Definitely one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet!!:)
