They didn't rename it. It's still Salem. They might distinguish between Old Town Salem and the newer areas, but it's all still Salem, Mass.

Most of the accused in the Salem Witch Trials lived in nearby 'Salem Village', now Danvers. Salem Village also included Peabody and parts of present-day Beverly. Middleton, Topsfield, Wenham and Manchester-by-the-Sea, too, were once parts of Salem.

Where did you hear this???? Salem was never renamed. My family and I went there last year on vacation and learned all about the witch trials.

i was unaware that it was changed but if so here's a guess. Salem means peace and during the witch trials and after there was anything but peace.

Salem, Massachusetts has been the same name since 1626.
