My dad did something to my computer which cleaned up my hard drive, by compressing files. I'm not sure how he did it, all I remember is he went in to something, and then box appeared, and he clicked on something...
Not very informative, I know...
But it needs saying...
So, anyone got any ideas??

In the start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools you should see "disk cleanup" run that

Also worth a go is CCLEANER from www.ccleaner.com a good "crap remover" that also tidies windows a little as well as the disc space

To clean up the hard drive, go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools. Then choose Disk Cleanup.

I would also recommend the program CCleaner. I use that on my computer and it cleans stuff up that regular Disk Cleanup does not.

Once you run these two programs, restart the computer and the run Disk Defragmenter, located in the same spot Disk Cleanup is.

Doing these three steps will make your computer run much smoother and faster.

It's called defragmenting the hard drive. Use the disk clean utility first to get rid of any junk. Defragging takes a long time so only do it when you're not using your computer.

In Vista right click Computer, then properties, performance and advanced tools. You can access the defragment utility through the Control panel in XP - look for performance and maintenance.

what your dad did was compress old files(to save space),however this slows down the file indexing and can in some cases make your p.c peform slower
your best bet is to download a excellent program called "advanced windowscare personal" from http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscarepro.html,this is a one click solution to all your p.c cleaning needs,it cleans all temporary files and also cleans spyware, and registry errors and much more
another good cleaner is "ccleaner" from http://www.ccleaner.com/,this again is a one click solution, and you can run both of these if you wish
i hope this helps
good luck !

if you meant by cleaning is erasing all, just format it. use a cd that can reformat or a boot disk. i think seagate hard drive has its own reformat cd.

if you meant cleaning by cleaning viruses, use anti-virus softwares.

or if you just want to clean up for the sake of cleaning up, you can go to start menu, all programs, accesories, system tools then disk clean up. (win xp)
