Believe it or not I use "Hartz Pet Stain & Odor Remover"! (I buy it at my Grocery Store, Food Basics -$4.79) It works amazingly!!! I sprayed a spot where the kids tracked mud in, and left it to 'soak' for a while; when I came back I couldn't even see where the spot was!
I use it all the time now!!! It's great on furniture! I even use it on laundry stains and add it to the laundry water occassionally! I also use it on/in shoes! Oh, and for 'pet stains' -terrific!! And did I mention how nice it smells?!

Hire a professional cleaner to do them. If you rent a machine, it would be difficult for you to handle it alone on the stairway and clean at the same time. The Rug Doctor machine is cumbersome.

i use a sprayer 3 part vinger 1 part water. let stand 15-20 mins. use you attment. from the shampooer. to suck it up
