It's totally normal for babies to wear sizes bigger than the recommended age. The clothing is designed for 'average' sized babies. My son is 4.75 months and is the 75th percentile for height and weight - he wears 12 month clothing comfortably. In brands that run large, he can squeak into 9 month clothing.
I think that the sizes are based on the 'average' sized baby of whatever age the size is for... but there are babies above and below the norm, so you really just have to go by what actually fits! :)

My daughter is huge too - 25 1/2" and over 17 lbs (95th percentile for both). She's not quite 5 months old and she's about to move into 12 month size clothes. She was wearing 6 month clothes at 6 or 8 weeks.
Honestly, I don't know many people whose kids have followed the sizes correctly, and the ones who do had really skinny kids. I just buy what fits, and laugh at how off the sizes are!

My boy is 2 months old and is wearing clothes for 6 months because he has a very long body. However he has short legs (well they are probably normal length for 2 month old) so the footsy part doesn't fit right with the sleepers LOL. I've developed the ability now to look at my boy and look at the outfit and determine if it will fit without looking at the tag.

yes this is normal, it depends on the make of the clothes. My daughter is 2 1/2 years old, she wears all kind of sizes. Some shirts she can wear 18 months, some she cant she has to wear a 3t, some pants she can fit a 24month some she cant she has to get a 3T. Its weird but its normal, the same with shoes and sneakers.

My 2 month old was growing out of the Gerber 3-6 month clothes. She is now 4 months and she is just about to grow out of her 6-9 Gerber onsies!
The sizing is almost always off! I have found Carters baby clothes to be right on track with my average size baby (she's in the 50th percentile for weight and 75th percentile for lenght).

it depends on the brand mostly...carters usually are pretty reliable with their sizes, but gerber runs small. my son is 2 months old and is already wearing gerber sizes 6-9 months. gymboree and the childrens place clothes usually run big. little one brand usually runs big as well. when i'm shopping i usually just buy the a size bigger then what he would normally wear during that time frame (like for winter....he'll be around 4-5 months then so i'll buy the 6-9/6-12 month stuff).

I guess they size based on standards. I have another problem with my daughter - she is going to turn 4 in a week and I still put on 2T clothes on her. All 3T pants are extremely long and falling off of her. Very hard to buy something in advance...

They never fit. We even buy 2 sets of pajama's mix to get a fitting pair (keeping the biggest for later and tossing the small pants out).

Yes that is very normal because your baby is tall.
As long as your baby doesnt fall into fat, that is okay if he wears bigger size clothes.
