It's annoying have a million (8) black cartridges since it comes in the (8) color set. Then I have to buy the black (5). Why can't it use the black (8) cartridge when it needs black ink? What is the (8) black for anyways??

You have a photo printer, and many photo printers use a color scheme that has two shades black (and often two shades of either cyan or magenta, 1 shade of yellow, along with one or two "flesh" colors, depending on the manufacturer). It also sounds like you print a lot more text documents than you do photos and color documents. Your local computer or electronics retailer should have the 5 cartridge by itself, and if you have a store in town that deals only with ink cartridges and toner cartridges, they'll probably have it cheaper.

Having said that, I would tell you that you might be better off getting an inexpensive laser printer for your "everyday" printing, like a Brother or a HP LaserJet. Most laser printers have toner cartridges that last for at least 2000 pages, if not more (my HP, for example, has printed out 5000 pages and the toner cartridge is about halfway empty). While it's an investment of between $100 and $200 for a basic laser printer (and a little more if you want a network-capable laser printer you can use with more than 1 computer at a time) and toner cartridges sound expensive at $70-$120 each (remember though, most toner cartridges are rated for at least 5000 pages or more), it sounds like it'll save you a lot of money in the long run.

What is it *actually* doing? Is it not printing at all? Does it give you an error? Did it work before you tried to change the cartrige? Is this a PC or Mac? What OS? Lots more information is needed. First, and this sounds stupid, double check all the connections. Make sure that the printer cable is connected to both the printer and computer firmly. Make sure that you installed the cartridges correctly. They come with a piece of thin plastic installed over the nozzels that has to be taken off. Many people overlook that and put them in straight out of the box. If it's printing funky lines, the nozzels may need to be aligned. Go to your computers control panel in the OS, click on the printer, and see if there are any tools avalible for it. The exact way to do this will be VERY different for different OSes. That's why much more information is needed.

It will either be a Gloss black or a "light black" ie grey . . . read the packaging in comes in.

It uses it for photo printing, or for text, depending which it is.

Try sourcing a supplier that sells inks individually so you only replace those you need to. Should be able to find individual colours without buying a complete set, that's the idea of individual tanks

You don't have to buy all of the cartridges when you need a replacement for one. Just buy them individually.
