It seems to be worse in the morning than in the evening and is especially noticeable between 3rd and 4th gear. It is not constant and is hard to predict when the smell will occur.

Your clutch is slipping and getting hot from the friction.
Weak pressure plate, and worn clutch plate.

Time for a new clutch and pressure plate.

I think that your clutch lining is being worn and your pressure plate is not producing the pressure that it is supposed to So you may need a complete clutch job though you did not say whether there is some slippage and if the 1st and reverse are hard to engage

possibly more load causing the engine to not run as effiecent
