you dont' suck... anyone who has told you that if you cant do this sucks... I am 36 and just figured this out a while back.. everyone here looks like they answered right... I also got 1/4 or .25 as some put it.
if you don't get math... don't quit. Math anxiety is real and it sucks... but you dont. Keep going, don't quit.
Here is a great book I went and got and it is very helpful: Painless Algebra by Lynette Long, PhD.
I used it to figure out quadratic equations and formulas, which is only a step or two further than where this is at... Don't give up...

7x + 4 = 3x + 5
4x = 1
x = 1/4
Answer: x = 1/4
Proof:
7(1/4) + 4 = 3(1/4) + 5
7/4 + 4 = 3/4 + 5
7/4 + 16/4 = 3/4 + 20/4
23/4 = 23/4

7x + 4 = 3x +5
Move like terms to same side and combine:
7x -3x = 5 - 4
4x = 1
Divide each side by 4:
x = 1/4

Subtract 3X from both sides:
4X+4=5
now subtract 4 from both sides
4X=1
Divide both sides by 4
X=1/4
Put this back in the equation and check your answer.
(7/4+4)=(3/4+5)
Now multipy both sides by 4:
(7+16)=(3+20)
23=23

7x+4= 3x+5
Let's keep the variable on the left side:
7x+4-3x=5
4x+4-4=5-4
4x=1
So, x=1/4.

Yes, you suck. And you need to do a bit of study to get 'unsucked' unless you want to spend your life asking "Would you like an order of fries with that?"

First step, subtract 3x from both sides.
Then subtract 4 from both sides.
This leaves you with 4x = 1
Thus x = 1/4

7x-3x=5-4
4x=1
4x /4=1/4
so then cancel out four on the left side of the equation (4x/4), u know, ummm....
oh yah then x=1/4 or .25 SATISFIED!!!!!
