Find yourself another premises to rent.
If this fellow wants to dodge the tax system, then let him go ahead. He'll sink his little ship eventually, don't let him take you down with him.
Full marks to you for getting your own business off the ground. Tempting though it might be to take the tax man for a ride, it's far too risky at this stage of your business career.
Play it by the books and you won't have to keep looking over your shoulder like this family member.

Don't you have a contract to occupy the premises?
You can't possibly have produced any accounts showing the rent you have paid him since 1 August as you have only been trading for a month! In order to find out that he is your landlord, HMRC would have to formally open an investigation into your accounts in order to ask who your landlord is - and this is really really unlikely! So this sounds like an excuse on your landlords part to me.

I think you need to find a new location, NOT the property of a family member.
You've got to do what's legal, or you'll lose more than your business.
Plus, you deserve to declare the money you're paying him for rent. That's just how businesses are. To not declare it will be unfair to you, because it basically means it would be put down as profit, and it's not.

I agree you should find another location.
But I suggest you go a step further, no one should be allowed to dodge the tax system. You should report this family member. Be discreet, but report them. It is this kind of activity that causes the rest of us taxpayers who pay the right amount of taxes an undue burden, supporting others who don't pay their share.

Pay him in cash...do whatever he wants but look for another place to work from as well and then grass him up to the tax man!
