I kind of disagree with the other answers, my husband has a dui on his record he went to jail because of it. he hasn't been able to find work for two years, I'm not kidding. he tried everything, mcdonalds to janitorial, cashier work anything that would bring in a income. he worked at home for purple heart doing phone calls for people to donate clothes but that only paid at the most 12 dollars. not 12 an hour but 12 per paycheck. it is because of the way it is set up. he only got paid per picked up order. anyway he is still looking for work, right now he is taking the H&R income tax classes hopeing that they will hire him or help him to find work afterwards even if its only seasonal. the other answerer are wrong, employees are doing background checks on everyone now days since 9/11 attacks and they seem to be going back about ten years. they do credit and crimminal checks now. I feel like you do that my husband is not wanted working in society. but don't give up. just remember they also look at your work history, if you have a history of moveing from job to job or have large gaps between jobs then thats considered a poor work history and yeah my husband has a poor work history unfortunetly but not all due to his fault. if you choose to do work at home via the internet becareful some are scams and some actually are good. go tho GMC ( good morning america) website. they did and continue to do a special section on how to find stay at home jobs on the internet, they tell you which one is profittable and which to stay away from. I'm sorry so many people are critcizing you on this board instead of helping you like they are suppose to. remember too that thier has been a lot of lay offs especially in the state that I live in and since you started driving you can go further out side your area. once you have a job then start looking for a better job, they say it is easier to get a job once you have one, go to a job bank if you have one in your area or social services office in your area they help people get back to work also. and whatever you do don't give up, try not to get depressed because this can be very depressing especially if you have a family to support, keep the faith, and I will keep you in my prayers. god bless!

Many former DUI's have jobs and live in communities among the regular folk. Perhaps it is the type of job you are seeking. Not all jobs require a screening of your misdemeanor record and a misdemeanor does not usually disqualify someone for most jobs. That DUI charge is not standing in your way.

Hmmmmm...tough question. Are you certain the DUI is what is keeping you from getting a job? It might not be that at all. It could be that you're not qualified for what you're applying for, you may not have the experience the employer is looking for.

An employer doesn't necessarily do a criminal background check unless it's called for: police department, fire department, bank, Federal job (in USA) or another high profile position.

Your question really didn't give enough details about the position you were applying for. Were you actually convicted of the DUI? A fine? Jail time?

Why do you have to move out of the country, are you a foreigner? Most job applications ask if you have ever been convicted of a FELONY. Misdemeanors are not felonies. I don't understand why people won't hire you KNOWING about the misdemeanor but I don't think you even need to tell them about it UNLESS you want a job where you have to drive. Also, after 3 years, I believe you can have your record expunged, you might want to check with your local motor vehicle administration.

Most companies do background checks now but unless you are going to be driving company vehicles, there shouldn't be a problem with you getting a job. They may want to talk to you about it a little just so they know that you have cleaned yourself up a bit and that they can rely on you but should be nothing more.

I don't have a misdemeanor and I still have been unable to find work myself since the layoffs in March.

Keep on seeking work it's out there I'm sure just a little harder to find.

Check with an attorney as to how you can get this off your record. Some states require you to complete an alcohol rehab program and once you do, the charge is off your record.

Also, remember when you have an interview, be HONEST. Explain that like every one--you were young and made a very very stupid decision. Explain that you have learned from it completely and do not advocate or support driving under the influence, or anything else that is illegal in this country.

Good luck!!

not sure where you're from or what kind of jobs you are trying to get, but you usually don't have to disclose misdemeanors on job apps and unless the job involves driving, employers don't usually require a driving record check. So, I don't really see your problem...
