After 2 kids and one on the way i find that if i imagine i'm slowly blowing up a ballon works really well, don't pant as it doesn't help just take big slow breaths and breath out slowly too. If you stay as calm as you can you'll do it fine. I know it's scary ... this is my 3rd and i'm still scared but millions of women give birth everyday.
You'll find whats comfortable for you when your in labour just think about your gorgeous baby at the end of it all. Good luck and enjoy your baby. x x

You want to search for Lamaze - or take a birthing class that teaches breathing techniques. Mostly the breathing techniques are to help you relax and decrease pain, but also sometimes to hasten or slow labor somewhat.
"Modern Lamaze childbirth classes teach expectant mothers breathing techniques and often other ways to work with the labor process to reduce the pain often associated with childbirth, such as hot and cold packs, changing positions, the use of a "birthing ball" to remain in an upright position, and orgasm to induce or hasten labor."

You are probably just gonna have to wait til it happens... the nurses and your doctor will help you through it. You will do whatever you need to do to get through it. Breathing through your contractions is supposed to help... I took a class before I had both my kids that was supposed to help, but when you are in the throws of labor, you just do whatever works best for you. Good luck and try not to worry.

wow - unsure of the unknown is the worst thing you could go into this thing with. i wish we could e-mail directly.
the first thing you have to know is the thing that hurts is your cervix dialting. the pain is a good thing. you have to figure out what works for you - find a focal point, paint a picture in your head - have your significant other wisper loving sayings in your ear.
2 - relax!! no screaming. no tensing up. if you have a coach, have them remind you to drop your shoulders and moan, if you must make noise.
3 - visualize your parts (hips, cervix, birth canal) opening and baby turning and coming through gracefully and correctly.
4 - whether or not you believe there is a god, he alone made that being in you come to life. ask him for help.

You jsut breathe however you want. Labor is actually pretty natural, and your body actually knows what to do, its getting around your head thats the hard part.
Stay relaxed. Taking deep breaths and pretending you're some place else helps to keep you relaxed.
