Its pretty easy to learn. You have to trust yourself. Your body actually weighs less than water so you will automatically float. You only get into trouble when you tense up. So just get comfortable in water at first. Get into a pool at the shallow end and walk around for a while. Sit down. Slip your feet off the bottom and see what happens. You will probably automatically tense up so you might start to sink, but you can slowly get yourself used to being in water and relax and you will find its very pleasant just to float suspended in water. Lie on the surface, face down, holding your breath. Enjoy the sensation. Get comfortable with it. You are very much in control.
Swimming itself is just a coordinated activity, one arm goes forward and then digs into the water with your hand closed, and the other arm is finishing the same cycle, its going as far back as it can after having completed its stroke. You coordinate this with controlled (not flailing) kicks of your legs. You can generate a lot of power and speed, its great exercise, its fun at any level. Get used to swimming in calm water before you go in the ocean or a moving stream, or even a lake with deep spots. Its real comfortable, its fun. And wear appropriate swim gear, you don't want to get dragged down with cutoffs or jeans, get a swimsuit. Hey, have fun!!

I live in Florida and I am surrounded by 3 bodies of water. In my case swimming is a necessity. It use to be a mandatory thing when I was in school that swimming was a part of the Physical education program. Please learn it is a great exercise which tones all the muscles expecially the heart.

I can swim, as a matter a fact i am the only person in the universe that has swam to the deepest part of the ocean without air and found the lost city of Atlantis. It was alot of fun, there were mermaids and dolphins and cats that barked.
