My girl is 6mos,started off with rice cereal, banana & carrots & got v.constipated for 3days with painful BM. So I stopped all that & started with oatmeal cereal, prunes & homemade applesauce & 1oz of diluted apple-prune juice. I gave her a little rice cereal again 2 days back & it's happening again. She grunts and passes gas but is not able to poop.
I have tried sitting her in warm water as my nurse suggested.
What do I do? Is it ok not to give rice cereal at all? Will she miss out on any nutrients?
How is she going to have solids if she gets constipated for every other food? !!
Pls dont suggest castor oil!!

What safe veggies can I introduce now?
Is two times a day enough? She breastfeeds and also has 6oz formula everyday.

My doctor told me that cereals have almost no nutritional value, so they aren't missing anything by not having them. I have a 9 month old that has been constipated since day one, 3 specialists and 2 pediatricians later we are looking at fructose malabsorbtion. I never realized how prevalent fructose is, it occurs naturally and is used as an additive. The doctor has eliminated the following to try and see if that's really the problem.
Apples
Pears
plums/prunes
grapes/raisins
mango
watermelon

I also found on an internet search that artichokes, asparagus, green beans, oniions and leeks contain chemicals that everntually turn into fructose. Not saying that's the problem but it is worth a try. I know how frustrating it is I have had 3 kids that have this problem. The oldest one is 9, so I have been on this road for 9 years. It's not easy but you have to be insistant that the doctor do their job and not send you home with a typical "well you don't breastfeed" response. If you think there is something wrong with your child then most likely it is.

at 6 months I was still only giving my daughter the rice cereal, and breast feeding her. I didnt start trying her on bananas and carrots and all of that stuff until like a month or so later. And you have to give it to her 1 thing at a time, dont start her off with 3 things. Give her 1 thing for 1 week, and then go on to something else, because its probably the bananas that are making your baby constipated. Try giving her some water instead of juice. And if you still breastfeed you should try drinking more water, because your breastmilk should be a natural laxitive.

well it happens many babies around that age. don't panic, this is something you can do, it might not sound very attractive but it works. You can start by massaging her anal area with some olive oil, press lightly around her anus and also massage her lower tummy gently you can ever wark the oil a lilt bit to help with the result. (you can also give to her some olive oil orally in addition to the massage, that will help too) then take an oral thermometer and insert just the tip into to her anus this stimulates her BM. Its almost like when you put your finger in your mouth to stimluate vomiting(thats the only example i can think of?. In the mean time I would dilute her formula and keep her on the diet you already have her on. No rice though, rice constipates

good luck mommy

you can try to mix some of the prunes baby food in the rice cereal to balance it out. I suggest to go get her some Malycon drops (may not be spelled correctly) but it helps infants with gas pain and such. If this still doesn't help then she may have some reaction to the ingredients in the rice cereal and you may have to stick with just the oatmeal kinda cereal.

I used to mix prunes w/ Noah's cereal each morning. Your pediatrician should have a food schedule for you to follow. Cereal (rice, then wheat, then barley), veges, fruits, and then meats (at 9mths). Our pediatrician doesn't recommend any juice. See what yours has to say...
