Pelargoniums may be divided into five broad groups, according to the main characteristics of the plant. The groups are zonal, regal, ivy-leaved, and scented-leaved.

When introduced to Britain, they were placed in the genus Geranium because of their similarity to the hardy, herbaceous species commonly grown in Europe. Then, they were moved to their own genus because of distinct botanical differences. However, this has not stopped most people from calling them geraniums. http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/guilford/garden/april19_03.html

Regals are the only Pelargonium commonly referred to as pelargoniums. They are also called Martha Washingtons, Lady Washingtons & Show pelargoniums (geraniums). Botanically they are P. x domesticum.

Zonals are so-called because there is a band of red pigment on the green leaf that appears as a brown to black zone. This is the most prolifically mutating species in Pelargonium. Sports have appeared & been utilized to hybridize different plant size, leaf coloration & flower forms. Botanically these are P. x hortorum.

Here are pictures of zonal pelargonium, known as P. x hortorum ‘Courtney’,
and the regal, P. x domesticum ‘Blue Moon’:

Regal Geraniums

Regal are also known as Martha Washington Geraniums (idk why)
Their flowers usually have 2 colors. They are gorgeous & can't take too much heat or cold. They are not considered as hardy as zonal, but are more expensive.
Seed geraniums look just like Zonal but aren't as big.
Zonal geraniums are propigated with cuttings. They are considered to be a stronger, bigger plant than the other 2.
